Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (G) takes the pumpkin in green on black — the only monochromatic green iteration in her printed output, the form and the dark field behind it built from the same two tones, the pumpkin distinguishable from its surroundings through the density and type of marks applied to each. The pumpkin is wide and low, its broad ribs spreading outward from a small black stem, the black dots ranging from small along the outer edges to large rounded marks across the widest areas, describing the volume of the form in green on black. The dark field behind carries a structure of irregular green lines forming larger, more open shapes than the tight dot sequence on the pumpkin itself — the background looser and more spacious, the pumpkin reading against it through the greater density of its own marks.

Green is the least used colour in the pumpkin series — the warm yellows, reds and oranges that dominate the other works connect the pumpkin to its autumnal associations, its harvest warmth. Green shifts that reading entirely, the colour of the growing plant rather than the harvested vegetable, the pumpkin still on the vine. Kusama has spoken of the pumpkin as a living presence, a form she felt responded to attention, and the green version carries that sense more directly than any other — the vegetable rendered in the colour of its own growth, the dots tracing something that feels alive in a way the warmer versions do not. The G designation simply names the colour, but the choice of green across a series that had explored yellow, red, orange, white and black before reaching this point suggests a systematic completeness — the palette extended to include the one colour that the pumpkin itself is made of before it ripens.
