Imperfect #1 (C.221) divides the horizontal surface into two strongly contrasting halves — the left dominated by a large white plane set against diagonal black hatching, the right packed with overlapping triangles in red, teal, dot-field gold, blue, and pale pink, the density of the right side pressing against the openness of the left with a tension that neither half resolves. The composition was asymmetric by design, the spare geometry of one side refusing to balance the chromatic complexity of the other.
The hard-edge painters of the 1960s — Kelly, Noland, Stella — had worked to eliminate exactly this kind of unresolved tension, pursuing colour relationships so precisely calibrated that the picture declared itself complete the moment you saw it. Lichtenstein's Imperfect Series found its argument in the space between that ideal and its failure, and Imperfect #1 (C.221) located that space through the most direct means: a composition split between restraint and density, the two halves coexisting without arriving at equilibrium. The collage elements added a physical discontinuity to a surface already structured around visual instability, the material of the print and the logic of the image working along the same lines.
