Growing 5 (Littmann P. 91), 1988 concludes Keith Haring's Growing series with one of its most visually intricate compositions. Arranged around a central figure rendered in yellow, red, blue and black, the image unfolds through a carefully balanced network of forms that fill the entire picture plane. Unlike the expansive structures seen elsewhere in the series, the composition is tightly organised, drawing the viewer's attention toward a central axis before expanding outward through mirrored shapes and repeating motifs.

The work possesses a distinctly architectural quality. Figures appear embedded within a larger framework, creating an image that feels simultaneously organic and constructed. The symmetrical arrangement recalls aspects of pre-Columbian art, particularly the stylised figures, geometric patterning and ceremonial imagery associated with Aztec and Maya visual traditions. While unmistakably Haring in style, the composition carries the presence of a carved relief or ancient symbolic tablet.

Throughout his career, Haring sought to create images that could communicate immediately while remaining open to multiple interpretations. In Growing 5, familiar elements from his visual vocabulary are arranged with unusual precision, producing a composition that rewards sustained viewing. As the eye moves across the surface, new figures and relationships emerge from within the broader design.

Created in 1988, the print demonstrates the remarkable versatility of Haring's pictorial language. By the conclusion of the Growing series, the artist had transformed his characteristic figures into increasingly sophisticated arrangements while preserving the directness and accessibility that define his work. The result is one of the most distinctive and ambitious compositions within the portfolio.
