Blue Floor (C.254) was the most spatially expansive work in Roy Lichtenstein's Interior Series — a image in which the vivid blue floor dominated the foreground, its open colour field pulling the eye into the depicted space with a force that the more contained compositions of the other Interiors had not achieved. Furniture — sofas, a lamp, a table — was arranged around the room's perimeter, the blue floor linking them as a continuous ground. Colour fields of the blue floor connected the Interior Series to the lineage of Matisse's interior paintings, in which bold, undivided colour had been used to flatten the depicted space and assert the painting's surface against the illusion of depth.
Lichtenstein acknowledged this precedent while pulling it through his own print terms — the Matissian colour field built through Ben-Day dots and the methods of commercial printing, the fine art source absorbed into a Pop Art context. The Interior Series arrived at a late point in Lichtenstein's career, and its choice of subject — the contemporary domestic interior — connected it to the broader cultural context of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when interior design had become a significant aspect of consumer culture and popular media. Blue Floor (C.254) addressed this context through its own means, the vivid blue of the floor asserting itself with bold authority like any product image or magazine spread.
