Keith Haring
42 1/2 x 79 in
Blueprint Drawing 1 (Littmann PP. 174–175) by Keith Haring arranges eleven separate scenes within a tightly ordered grid that recalls comic strips, storyboard sequences and technical diagrams.
Figures run, fall, dance and collide whilst dogs bark and radiant lines pulse outward from selected forms. The monochrome palette introduces a cooler and more diagrammatic atmosphere that echoes architectural plans, instruction sheets and printed visual manuals. Dot patterning further reinforces this connection to commercial reproduction and graphic communication, whilst also referencing the comic books and mass-media printing processes.
The grid format also reveals the extraordinary consistency and adaptability of Haring’s imagery. Motifs developed originally through rapid subway drawings and public interventions are reorganised here into a carefully controlled system, almost functioning as a catalogue of recurring symbols from throughout the 1980s.
The repeated figures maintain the immediacy and accessibility central to Haring’s work whilst acquiring a new sense of order and structural precision within the compartmentalised format. Blueprint Drawing 1 remains one of the clearest demonstrations of Haring’s ability to balance spontaneity with control. Through monochrome line, repeated symbolism and tightly organised framing, the print exposes the underlying architecture of Haring’s visual universe whilst preserving the raw energy and direct communication that defined his broader practice.
