Roy Lichtenstein

Roommates (C.282) is among the most visually layered works in Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series, bringing together the female figure, the domestic interior and multiple references to his own earlier motifs within a single image. Two women occupy the room: one reclining on a bed with a book, the other turning sharply toward the viewer, her blonde bob and red lips drawn in the unmistakable style that had defined Lichtenstein’s heroines since the 1960s. The source image came from a 1963 edition of the comic book Young Love, though the print moves far beyond its origins in popular illustration.
The surrounding interior carries echoes of several major bodies of work from Lichtenstein’s career. Mirrors, framed geometric images and carefully structured furnishings recall the Interior, Mirror and Reflections series, turning the room into a condensed survey of his broader visual language. The contrast between the soft curves of the figures and the hard geometry of the furniture gives the work much of its tension, balancing intimacy with the cool clarity that defines the Nudes Series.
Produced using a combination of hand-cut and computer-generated dye-cut stencils, the print marked the first collaboration between Lichtenstein and Swan Engraving. Layered colour passages and overlapping dot patterns create a denser, more complex surface than many earlier works, extending the Ben-Day vocabulary into new technical territory.
