Roy Lichtenstein

Nude with Yellow Pillow (C.283) places the female figure against one of the boldest colour fields in Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series. The saturated yellow pillow cuts sharply across the image, flattening the surrounding space and giving the print an immediate visual intensity associated with both Pop Art and modernist painting.
The reclining pose carries clear echoes of the long tradition of the nude in Western art, from Titian and Manet through to Modigliani and Matisse. Lichtenstein filters that history through his own Pop vocabulary: thick black outlines, Ben-Day dots and simplified planes of colour replace painterly modelling and atmospheric depth. The result feels simultaneously familiar and deliberately artificial, balancing glamour, surface and graphic precision.
By the 1990s, Lichtenstein’s engagement with art history had become increasingly direct, though never heavy-handed. Rather than quoting specific paintings outright, Nude with Yellow Pillow absorbs elements of modern figure painting into the language of commercial print, allowing Pop imagery and historical reference to coexist within the same sharply controlled image.
