Taureau Sous l'Arbre by Pablo Picasso reduces a pastoral scene to a few direct, confident marks, using the ceramic plate as a compact image field. Produced in 1952 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 500, the work comes from a period when Picasso had fully settled into ceramics, treating the medium with the same urgency as drawing.
At the centre, a bull stands in profile beneath a simplified tree. The animal is built from a handful of sweeping lines that carry its weight without overworking the form, while the tree provides a vertical counterpoint, reduced to trunk and loose foliage. The scene is balanced but kept open, with the surrounding space left largely untouched.
The surface is handled with restraint. Dark oxidised paraffin marks sit against the pale ground, creating a clear contrast that holds the image together. The brushwork remains fluid and slightly uneven, allowing the material to stay visible. Around the rim, a border of dark spots frames the scene, echoing the circular format without closing it off completely.
By the early 1950s, Picasso had been working in Vallauris for several years, developing a close relationship with the Madoura studio and its techniques. The medium encouraged clarity—quick decisions, simplified forms, and a focus on line over detail. Rather than building the image up, he pares it back.
The bull is a recurring subject throughout Picasso’s work, often tied to ideas of force and spectacle. Here, it’s handled differently. The tension is removed, replaced by a quieter, more grounded presence that aligns with the rural setting.
Taureau Sous l'Arbre shows how little is needed. A few lines, a controlled surface, and the shape of the plate are enough to hold the scene, with the material doing much of the work.
