Toros by Pablo Picasso reduces the bull to a pair of simple, contrasting images, using the surface of the plate to hold a quiet, almost narrative shift. Made in 1952 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 500, the work comes from a point when Picasso was working quickly and instinctively in clay, treating the format as a contained space for image-making.

Toros is split into two fields. Above, a standing bull is set against a pale turquoise ground, its form held in a dark, economical silhouette. A small tree sits to one side, barely described but enough to place the figure within a landscape. Below, the tone deepens to blue, where a second bull lies at rest, its body reduced further, with only the head and horns clearly defined.

The shift between the two zones creates a simple but effective tension—movement and stillness, alertness and rest. Picasso doesn’t overstate it. The figures are handled with the same direct brushwork, allowing the contrast in posture and colour to carry the idea.

The glaze plays a key role. The turquoise and blue grounds hold slight variations in tone, giving the surface depth without complicating it. The brushstrokes remain visible, keeping the image close to drawing, even as it sits within the ceramic material.

Around this time, Picasso was deep into his Vallauris years, working closely with the Madoura studio and refining how he used glaze, slip and form together. Subjects tied to the Mediterranean—animals, landscape, daily life—appear frequently, but are consistently pared back to essentials.

The bull, a constant in his work, is handled here without spectacle. Instead of confrontation or drama, the focus shifts to presence—two states of the same animal held within a single, controlled space.

Toros works through contrast and restraint. The image resolves through a few marks and a clear division of colour, with the circular format keeping everything contained and balanced.
