Keith Haring
24 x 36 in
Untitled 4 (Littmann pp. 18–21) by Keith Haring combines several of the artist's most recognisable motifs within a highly condensed and symbolic work. At the centre of the image stands a radiant figure illuminated by a beam descending from a flying saucer above. Two barking dogs occupy the lower corners of the piece, directing attention toward the central event, while a second UFO hovers in the background. Executed in Haring's characteristic black-and-white style, the work transforms a simple arrangement of forms into an image charged with energy and ambiguity.
The flying saucer was a recurring image in Haring's arsenal, reflecting both the fascination with science fiction that permeated popular culture during the late twentieth century and his broader interest in symbols that could be universally recognised. Rather than presenting a literal narrative of extraterrestrial contact, Haring employs the UFO as an open-ended sign, allowing viewers to project their own interpretations onto the scene. The barking dogs reinforce this ambiguity. Frequently appearing throughout Haring's work, they have been interpreted as symbols of authority, communication, protection and warning, acting here as witnesses to the event unfolding before them.
Untitled 4 demonstrates Haring's ability to build a compelling image from a small number of recurring symbols, creating a work that remains playful, enigmatic and immediately recognisable.
