Montreux Green (Littmann PP. 24–27) by Keith Haring presents a looping yellow figure animated by continuous movement against a saturated orange ground, created as part of the artist’s celebrated series of posters for the 1983 Montreux Jazz Festival.

At the centre of the work, Haring’s elongated figure twists into a spiralling form that moves across the surface like an improvised musical phrase. The coiling torso creates a visual rhythm that guides the eye through the image, while short radiating marks surrounding the body function like pulses of sound or syncopated beats. Despite the simplicity of the figure, the work maintains a strong sense of momentum, with each curve and angle contributing to the overall cadence of the work.

The fluorescent palette intensifies this effect. The vivid yellow figure pushes sharply against the orange field, while turquoise borders and areas of saturated pink introduce additional chromatic tension. Haring uses colour here structurally rather than decoratively, allowing contrasting tones to activate the surface and generate an optical vibration that echoes the physical energy of music and dance.

Music and nightlife occupied a central role within Haring’s personal and artistic world during the early 1980s. Through his partner Juan Dubose, who worked as a DJ within New York’s club scene, Haring remained closely connected to the communities surrounding venues such as Paradise Garage, Club 57 and the Mudd Club. The improvisational structures of jazz, hip-hop and dance music informed the rhythm of his works, where repetition and variation operate in ways comparable to musical phrasing.

The Montreux posters coincide with Haring’s rapid emergence onto an international stage, as his subway drawings evolved into exhibitions, public commissions and collaborations across music and performance culture. The Montreux Jazz Festival itself had expanded beyond traditional jazz programming into funk, electronic and experimental music, making Haring’s graphic approach particularly suited to its evolving identity.
