Montreux Yellow (Littmann PP. 24–27) by Keith Haring presents a spiralling pink figure in perpetual motion against a vivid turquoise ground, and was created as the official poster for the 1983 Montreux Jazz Festival. The work captures the rhythmic energy that connected Haring’s art to music, dance and club culture throughout his career.

The work demonstrates Haring’s instinctive understanding of visual rhythm. The figure’s coiled torso twists across the surface like a looping musical phrase, while black lines extend from its limbs to suggest vibration, sound and physical movement. The intense turquoise field is enclosed within a saturated yellow border, creating a sharp chromatic contrast that heightens the optical energy of the image.

Haring uses this fluorescent palette to evoke the atmosphere of stage lighting, nightclub interiors and live performance. Music occupied a central position within Haring’s life and social world during the early 1980s. Through his partner Juan Dubose, who worked as a DJ and was deeply embedded in New York’s club scene, Haring maintained close connections to the musical communities surrounding venues such as the Paradise Garage, the Mudd Club and Club 57. These environments shaped the rhythm and movement of his imagery as much as street culture or graffiti, with repetition, syncopation and improvisation becoming visual equivalents to the structures of contemporary music.

Montreux aligns with a formative stage in Haring’s international recognition, as his work moved rapidly from the subway system into galleries, public commissions and global cultural projects. The Montreux Jazz Festival itself had evolved beyond its jazz origins into a broader platform embracing funk, electronic music and experimental performance, making Haring a natural choice for its visual identity. His graphic approach possessed the same immediacy, accessibility and improvisational quality that defined the festival’s programming.
