Keith Haring
Three Lithographs Complete Portfolio (Littmann PP. 39–41) by Keith Haring comprises of three works that demonstrate the expansion of Haring’s art during the mid-1980s, as his work moved from the immediacy of downtown New York’s streets into more formal printmaking and gallery context.
Created in 1985 the portfolio reflects an important stage in the development of his practice, where the visual directness of his subway drawings was translated into more structured works intended for a wider circulation.
Produced in 1985, the portfolio aligns with a period when Haring’s practice was rapidly expanding into galleries, museums and international projects, without abandoning the democratic principles that defined his early work. The establishment of Pop Shop in the same year reinforced his commitment to accessibility, positioning printmaking as a natural extension of his broader artistic approach.
The consistent orange borders unify the three prints while allowing each to maintain an independent identity. The restrained palette of black, cream, white and selective areas of orange and red creates continuity across the portfolio, while directing attention toward recurring structural motifs such as radiating lines, interlocking figures and symbolic forms. Three Lithographs Complete Portfolio captures Haring at an early stage of consolidation, where the spontaneity of his street-based imagery begins to merge with a more controlled and developed print practice.
