Untitled 1–3 Complete Portfolio (Free South Africa) (Littmann PP. 42- 43) by Keith Haring comprises of three lithographs and was created in 1985 as part of the artist’s response to apartheid South Africa.

The set occupies an important position within Haring’s early print practice, as he moved from the immediacy of subway drawings and downtown interventions into a more formalised and institutionalised way of producing his art. The series demonstrates how the clarity and urgency of his street imagery could be translated into editioned works without losing their directness or political force.

The bold red borders framing each work symbolically contain the violence of the scenes while unifying the three prints as a cohesive portfolio. Prints and editioned works provided Haring with a medium capable of preserving the bold contours and graphic clarity central to his public work while introducing a greater degree of control. The editioned format also aligned with his broader commitment to accessibility, extending the democratic principles of his street practice into printmaking and gallery distribution.

Across the portfolio, repetition and variation function in ways comparable to his mural and subway drawings, where recurring symbols could be reorganised to generate new meanings.

Produced in 1985, the portfolio aligns with a formative stage in Haring’s transition from underground visibility to international recognition. Exhibitions, institutional projects and the opening of Pop Shop all expanded the reach of his imagery during this period, yet works such as Free South Africa retain the immediacy and confrontational clarity associated with his earliest public interventions.

Across the three works, graphic immediacy, political urgency and control operate together within one of the artist’s earliest sustained print portfolios.
