Ludo 4 (Littmann p. 46) by Keith Haring from the Ludo series of five works presents an alligator-like figure and showcases the intricate and fluid line work for which Haring became famous. Created during a key period in Haring's career, with the opening of the Pop Shop famed venture in SoHo, the work demonstrates his ability to transform simple forms into imaginative and highly expressive imagery.

Dominating Ludo 4 is a fantastical creature rendered in Haring's characteristic black contour line. Part dragon, part alligator and part invented symbol, the figure occupies almost the entire work, its animated form brought to life through rhythmic patterning and bold graphic contrasts. Rather than relying on narrative, Haring allows the image to communicate through movement, energy and visual impact, encouraging multiple interpretations.

The Ludo series reflects Haring's interest in play, imagination and universally understood symbols. Drawing its title from the ancient board game, the series explores a more fantastical side of his practice, introducing hybrid creatures and invented forms alongside the motifs for which he became internationally recognised.
