Statue of Liberty (Littmann P. 63) by Keith Haring presents the iconic American monument rendered in his distinctive bold lines and vibrant use of colour. Executed in 1986, the print reimagines the Statue of Liberty in electric green against a coral-red background, transforming the neoclassical sculpture into an image of energy and movement.

The work sits within Haring’s broader engagement with American iconography during the mid-1980s, when he increasingly addressed political and social themes through his art.

Created in the year of the Statue of Liberty’s centennial celebrations, it holds both commemoration and critique in balance. Haring strips away the monument’s traditional gravitas, introducing his characteristic dancing figures at the base, and turns the statue into an almost playful figure

These yellow forms, rendered with short radiating marks, suggest both celebration and pressure, holding the duality of American ideals and their lived reality. The Statue maintains her classical pose—torch raised, tablet held—but Haring’s thick black outlines and saturated green colouring shift the figure closer to his own style that peppered the streets and galleries of New York at this time.

The coral background, punctuated by radiating lines around the flame introduces a sense of urgency that counters the monument’s intended permanence. The dancing figures below can be read as a collective presence, reinforcing the idea of the monument as a site of gathering while also drawing attention to who is represented within that space.

The electric palette—far removed from the patinated copper of the original—introduces an alternative reading of liberty, one grounded in movement and visibility rather than static form.
