Keith Haring
24 3/4 x 30 in
Pop Shop Quad I (Littmann P. 81) by Keith Haring divides a single sheet into four coloured panels, each self-contained but read together as one continuous strip, closer in structure to a comic page than to a conventional print.
In the top left, a yellow radiant figure stands arms raised against a pink ground, a red fist reaching in from beyond the frame to fist bump the figure through a circular opening at its centre. Beside it, the palette reverses: a teal figure floats horizontally across yellow, while a pink figure below reaches upward to close the distance between them. Below, on teal scattered with radiating lines, a yellow figure gestures toward a red companion mid-exchange. The final panel turns red: a small central figure is lifted between two taller ones, arms raised together in support. Pink dotted ground runs along three of the four scenes, tying the sequence together as the palette shifts panel to panel.
Produced in 1987, the year Haring opened his Pop Shop on Lafayette Street, the print was published by Martin Lawrence Limited Editions in an edition of 45. The quad format let Haring do in one object what four separate walls might otherwise hold — distinct scenes placed side by side, the connections left for the viewer to draw. The same thick black contour and flat colour carry every panel regardless of tone, proof that his reduced, symbol-based figures could shift from contact to longing to support without ever changing their underlying grammar.
