Keith Haring
38 x 38 in
Apocalypse 9 (Littmann P. 109) by Keith Haring presents a chaotic scene of biblical imagery and forms part of Haring’s 1988 Apocalypse portfolio.
Dominated by a brilliant turquoise form, the work swarms with strange figures that create a sense of disconnection. A large animal skull-like form occupies the upper portion, its gaping mouth releasing black liquid that pours down the work that read as tears or blood, while a crowned photograph of a nun sits at the centre. Around the piece are jarring forms, a man hanging naked upside down, rectangular snakes and even a chalice held by the nun.
Produced in 1988, the work reflects a moment when Haring drew more directly on apocalyptic imagery, particularly that of the Book of Revelation. Rather than illustrating these sources, Haring reconfigures the, using multiple symbolic imagery. . The density of overlapping forms creates a sense of continuous movement and a sense that the work is spiralling out of control, perhaps reflecting the wider anxieties of the Cold War.
