Keith Haring
22 x 27 3/4 in
Chocolate Buddha 3 by Keith Haring is part of the Chocolate Buddha series, and was produced at a time when spiritual symbolism and increasingly contemplative structures began to occupy a more prominent role within his work.
Instead of a literal depiction of a Buddha, Haring uses an abstract, looping animal form set against a tightly packed background of pink abstract lines, creating a contrast between the two.
The pink palette introduces a controlled warmth distinct from the bright primary colours more commonly associated with Haring’s earlier work, giving the print a more restrained and meditative atmosphere. The work is enclosed within a geometric border structure that recalls decorative architectural framing and diagrammatic forms. These repeated angular background motifs reinforce the work’s symmetry and containment, while also introducing a visual rhythm that echoes the looping movement of the central figure.
Despite the compression of imagery, the work retains a strong sense of legibility and rhythmic flow throughout the piece. Chocolate Buddha 3 demonstrates the flexibility of Haring’s late, where recurring forms evolve into more concentrated symbolic structures.
