Keith Haring
22 x 27 3/4 in (each)
Chocolate Buddha Complete Portfolio (Littmann PP. 122–125) by Keith Haring comprises of five works and is one of the most contemplative and visually compressed portfolios produced by the artist.
Across the set, Haring adapts his established line into increasingly intricate and meditative works replacing the open spatial energy of his earlier murals and subway drawings with dense networks of interlocking forms, symmetrical structures and rhythmic patterning.
The portfolio departs significantly from the bright primary palettes most closely associated with Haring’s public imagery. Instead, the works employ restrained combinations of chocolate brown, turquoise, muted mint, burgundy and pink, creating a warmer and more subdued atmosphere.
Across the five works, recurring motifs—looping figures, abstracted faces, serpentine forms and geometric framing devices—are reorganised into highly controlled visual systems built through repetition and symmetry. Rather than functioning through direct narrative, the works operate through rhythm, interconnected movement and visual continuity.
Produced in 1989, the Chocolate Buddha portfolio reflects Haring’s growing engagement with spiritual philosophy and symbolic imagery during the final years of his life. Rather than abandoning the accessibility central to his practice, the series expands his into a more concentrated and contemplative register.
The imagery remains unmistakably recognisable as Haring’s, yet they reveal a heightened interest in balance, symbolic compression and sustained visual rhythm. Viewed together, the five prints function as a unified exploration of interconnectedness, movement and structure. The portfolio demonstrates how Haring’s practice evolved beyond the immediacy of street intervention into works of greater density and reflection, while preserving the directness, clarity and universal legibility that defined his work throughout the 1980s.
