Keith Haring
30 x 22 1/4 in
Stones 1 (Littmann P. 126) by Keith Haring uses negative space to carve an outstretched hand from the sheet, Haring's recognisable figures gathered at the tips of each finger.
The Stones series marks a return to lithography, the medium Haring had used before screenprint became his default, and with it a return to the black-and-white economy of the subway drawings that first made his name. Stripped of colour, the hand motif here relies entirely on the tension between the white ground and the black shapes it carves out — a more restrained, meditative register than the saturated Pop Shop years, made in the same year Haring was producing some of his most colour-driven work elsewhere.
