Stones 3 (Littmann P. 127) by Keith Haring, part of the series of the same name, features tight angular linework, typical of Haring, unfolding in a labyrinth of movement recalling ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The contrast between white line and black ground heightens the intensity of the work creating a stark and simple piece colour palette that contrasts with the intricacy of the lines. The Stones series marked a significant development within Haring’s output where he turned to more reflective, subdued imagery and colours. While his earlier murals and subway drawings often relied on open spatial movement and direct figures, these works operate through density and constraint. The title Stones also introduces associations with permanence, mark-making and ancient forms of symbolic communication, linking Haring’s interest in broader traditions of Japanese and indigenous printmaking.
