Stones 5 (Littmann P. 127) by Keith Haring reworks familiar Haring imagery in a new context. Gone are the vivid pop colours of his earlier practice in place of a monochromatic palette which recontextualises the famous motifs.

Throughout the piece, Haring’s bold lines and signature imagery combine to create a densely packed work. The stripped back colours allow these motifs to never feel overworked, instead the piece creates a sense of harmony and of continuity that, if colour was used, would feel overwhelming.

The Stones portfolio was produced at a time in the artist’s career where his subject matter and execution became more introspective and more meditative. Prior to the Stones series, Haring explored similar line work and form in the more colourful Chocolate Buddha series, which can be seen as the incubator for the ideas that are expressed in Stones 5.
