Keith Haring
13 1/2 x 16 1/2 in
Pop Shop VI (A), (Littmann P. 150) by Keith Haring focuses on two of Haring’s famous figures in brilliant blue and vibrant orange set across a bright yellow background.
At the centre of the image, a blue figure stretches outward through an outstretched orange figure creating a structure that feels simultaneously playful and protective. Haring’s thick black contour lines compress the bodies into a unified arrangement of looping limbs while short radiating marks animate the surface with bursts of physical energy.
The image reflects Haring’s extraordinary ability to communicate complex emotional relationships through radically simplified forms. Rather than relying on details, Haring uses simplified form and posture to suggest ideas of solidarity, cooperation and shared vitality. Created during the final year of Haring’s life, the print formed part of the broader Pop Shop project he launched in SoHo in 1986 to make his work available outside traditional gallery structures. Through prints, posters, clothing and objects, Haring sought to collapse distinctions between street culture, commercial imagery and fine art, allowing his to circulate freely within everyday life.
By the close of the 1980s, Haring’s imagery had achieved global visibility, yet works from the Pop Shop VI series reveal the remarkable clarity and control of his late practice. Reducing the scene to only a handful of interlocking forms, Haring creates an image filled with movement, optimism and collective energy, reinforcing why the Pop Shop editions remain among the defining works of his career.
