Keith Haring
13 1/2 x 16 1/2 in
Pop Shop VI (C) (Littmann P. 150) by Keith Haring focuses on a single enlarged orange hand stretched across blazing yellow field as, instead of fingers, Haring’s famous figures emerge from the palm.
The hand dominates the work with figures dancing and moving - their movement heightened by the artist’s use of black line and energy marks. Haring strips the image down to its most essential elements, allowing colour, scale and gesture to carry the emotional force of the work. The raised palm can suggest greeting, resistance, warning or recognition simultaneously, reflecting Haring’s ability to create symbols that remain open whilst communicating instantly.
Through prints, posters and commercial objects, Haring sought to circulate his imagery within everyday life whilst preserving the immediacy associated with his public work across New York. The silkscreen process proved central to that ambition, allowing for saturated colour, sharp outlines and wider accessibility without sacrificing visual impact. As Haring’s reached its most refined stage during the late 1980s, works from the Pop Shop VI portfolio demonstrated how effectively he could communicate through radical simplicity alone. Pop Shop VI (C) reduces the image to a single amplified gesture, yet retains the rhythm, energy and directness that continue to make Haring’s work among the most recognisable in contemporary art.
