Keith Haring
13 1/2 x 16 1/2 in
Pop Shop VI (D) (Littmann P. 151) by Keith Haring depicts a vivid orange multi-bodied figure set against an intense blue background, its figures extending outward in a burst of rhythmic movement and energy.
Produced in 1989 as a silkscreen, the work forms part of Haring’s late Pop Shop VI series, where his imagery became increasingly condensed into bold, instantly recognisable symbols built through gesture, repetition and colour contrast.
The figure dominates the surface through its exaggerated physicality. Multiple figures radiate outward beneath Haring’s characteristic motion marks, creating a sensation of constant movement that recalls dance, performance and amplified sound.
As throughout the Pop Shop works, the image is simplified yet emotionally direct, relying on repetition, colour and bodily movement rather than high details. The print was created in direct connection with Haring’s Pop Shop project in SoHo, launched in 1986 to challenge the exclusivity of traditional gallery systems. Through prints, posters, clothing and objects, Haring sought to circulate his imagery as widely as possible whilst maintaining the accessibility central to his practice.
During the final years of his career, Haring refined his imagery into some of the most recognisable symbols in contemporary art. Works from the Pop Shop VI series reveal how effectively he could generate intensity and movement through only a handful of forms, and Pop Shop VI (D) remains a strong example of his ability to merge street culture.
