Kutztown (Littmann P. 163) by Keith Haring depicts two figures embracing and uses a distinctive stripped back style. Unlike the densely energetic movement found in many of Haring’s better-known works, Kutztown possesses a quieter and more reflective atmosphere, recalling the simplicity and intimacy of Picasso’s late line drawings and ceramic imagery. The title references Kutztown, Pennsylvania, close to Haring’s hometown of Reading, grounding the work within a more personal geography than much of his urban imagery from the 1980s.

Produced in 1989, the print belongs to the final phase of Haring’s career, when themes of memory, learning and human connection appeared with increasing frequency throughout his work.

The figures are reduced to simplified contours and repeated marks, yet their physical interaction remains immediately legible. This reductive approach carries a distinctly Picasso-esque quality, particularly in the way Haring uses continuous lines to build expressive figures from only a handful of marks.

Without the saturated colour associated with many of his Pop Shop editions, attention shifts toward balance, spacing and the rhythm of the line itself. The open white ground gives the figures room to breathe, creating a measured work that differs noticeably from the compressed energy of his large-scale mural works. Kutztown remains one of the more personal and understated prints from Haring’s later years, combining directness with a quieter sense of reflection. Through only a small number of forms and gestures, the work conveys ideas of learning, connection and shared experience with remarkable clarity.
