Flowers 2 (Littmann P. 166) by Keith Haring combines floral imagery, radiant symbols and interlocking organic forms within a densely animated landscape.

Unlike the sharper graphic tension of many earlier works, the image unfolds through flowing curves and expanding rhythmic shapes that blur distinctions between flowers, figures and abstract movement. A radiant yellow sun occupies the upper corner of the work, sending bursts of energy across a field of vivid reds, yellows and blues.

Three flower-stem forms rise through the composition, each built from the same phallic vocabulary that runs through the series, and a chain-like linear element cuts across their centre. Where Flowers 1 stages a single, isolated act, this print reads as a group threatened by an external, encircling force — a more explicitly constrained image than its predecessor in the set, and one that has been read as a comment on the physical and psychological pressure of living with HIV in the final year of the epidemic’s first decade.

The blue background, activated by scattered white linear marks, introduces a sense of movement and atmospheric depth that contrasts with the compressed density of the foreground imagery. Haring’s black contour lines hold the composition together despite the sheer quantity of incident on the surface, allowing the two readings – celebration and restraint – to coexist without either one cancelling the other out.
