The Icons Complete Portfolio (Littmann PP. 170–171) by Keith Haring comprises of a set of five works that bring together some of the most iconic and instantly recognisable motifs from Haring’s entire career: Radiant Baby, Barking Dog, Three Eyed Monster, X Man and Angel. Isolated against vividly coloured backgrounds, the portfolio distills Haring’s career into a series of concentrated graphic symbols that function with extraordinary immediacy and clarity.

Across the portfolio, Haring reduces each image to its essential visual components — thick black contour lines, saturated colour, repeated energy marks and radically simplified forms. Removed from the dense interconnected structures of many earlier works, the motifs operate here with maximum force and legibility, reinforcing the direct visual communication that defined Haring’s broader artistic philosophy.

Together, the five works function almost like a condensed dictionary of the artist’s most enduring motifs. The Icons portfolio reflects the extraordinary consistency of Haring’s imagery across multiple mediums throughout the 1980s. These motifs first appeared in his subway drawings before expanding into paintings, murals, sculptures, public commissions and editioned prints, eventually becoming inseparable from his artistic identity. By isolating each image individually within the series, Haring emphasises their ability to communicate instantly across cultural and linguistic boundaries, reinforcing his belief that art should remain public, accessible and universally readable.

The embossment process introduces a subtle physical relief to the silkscreen surfaces, adding tactile depth whilst preserving the flat graphic clarity central to Haring’s imagery. The precision of the printing intensifies the contrast between colour and line, allowing each work to retain the immediacy associated with graffiti, advertising and street signage. Despite their apparent simplicity, the images possess remarkable symbolic flexibility, capable of suggesting energy, warning, spirituality, innocence or transformation depending on context. Icons Complete Portfolio remains one of the clearest and most refined distillations of Haring’s produced in print form.

Bold, accessible and instantly recognisable, the five works encapsulate the energy and symbolic power that established Haring as one of the defining visual artists of the late twentieth century.
