Rinso, from Portfolio I by Jean-Michel Basquiat takes a 1950s soap brand and turns it into one of his most direct statements about race and the language of commercial culture. Against a black ground — the image working like chalk on a board — figures, crowns, and product copy accumulate until the cleaning promise of the brand and the political act of whitewashing become indistinguishable. KINGFISH appears at the top, the name of a racially caricatured character from Amos 'n' Andy, one of the most contested representations of Black life in mid-century American media, placed here in the same frame as soap advertising without further comment.

Rinso was a real detergent brand whose advertising ran through the 1940s and 50s in the same cultural moment that produced Amos 'n' Andy, and Basquiat places them together deliberately. Whitewashing is both a cleaning product's promise and a political act — the erasure or softening of history, identity, and harm through the repeated application of an official narrative. That the phrase is partially crossed out does not cancel it; as throughout Basquiat's output, the crossing out draws attention to what it marks rather than removing it.

Basquiat grew up watching American television and absorbing its representations of Black life alongside the history those representations were designed to displace. By 1983 he was in a position to address that displacement directly, with an audience that was paying attention — and Rinso, from Portfolio I, is among the most legible expressions of that project, commercial language taken apart until what it was always doing becomes impossible to ignore.
