Untitled (Head), from Portfolio I by Jean-Michel Basquiat is among the most formally resolved images he made — a single skull filling almost the entire sheet, built from overlapping passages of white, red, blue, brown, and yellow against a black ground, the eyes wide and fixed, the teeth visible at the jaw, the crown of the head edged with a row of marks that reads like a crown without being one. It is simultaneously a skull, a portrait, and a mask, none of these readings cancelling the others.

The head as subject runs through the entirety of Basquiat's output with a consistency that sets him apart from almost every other artist of his generation. From the earliest SAMO tags through the paintings of 1981 and 1982 that brought him to international attention — Skull, Self-Portrait as a Heel, Dos Cabezas painted with Warhol in an afternoon — the head was the site where everything converged: identity, mortality, race, the relationship between the visible face and the skeleton beneath it, the question of what survives. The art historical tradition Basquiat was absorbing and responding to — from Holbein's skull in The Ambassadors to Cézanne's late skull paintings to Picasso's weeping heads — understood the skull as the image that collapses the distance between the living and the dead, the person and the object. Basquiat understood this and pushed it further, adding the dimension of the Black body as a site of examination, classification, and vulnerability that Western art had largely refused to address directly.

Untitled (Head) is the work in Portfolio I that carries this argument in its most compressed form — the skull as self-portrait, as anatomy lesson, as political statement, as painting, all at once, the layers of colour doing what the layers of meaning do, each one visible through the next.
