After Portrait of Michel Leiris by Francis Bacon takes the face of his closest intellectual companion and submits it to the same examination he applied to every subject he cared about — not to capture a likeness but to find what lies beneath one.

Leiris and Bacon had met in Paris and developed one of the most genuinely reciprocal friendships of Bacon's life. Where most of Bacon's relationships were defined by desire, dependency or guilt, the connection with Leiris operated on different terms — two men united by a shared obsession with mortality, the body under pressure, and the limits of what representation can honestly show. Leiris had written one of the earliest and most perceptive critical essays on Bacon's work, and Bacon had responded by returning to his face repeatedly across the 1970s and 1980s, treating it with the same concentrated attention he gave to Dyer and Edwards but with an added intellectual charge — the knowledge that his subject understood exactly what was being done to him and consented to it completely.

The lithograph derives from the 1976 oil painting now held in the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris. The face is simultaneously present and coming apart — features displaced rather than destroyed, the distortion operating within the structure of the head rather than erupting through it. A single point of the composition holds with unusual clarity, the rest in motion around it, which is characteristic of how Bacon approached the faces of those he knew best. He was not interested in the social face, the face presented to the world. He was after what Leiris himself had spent his career trying to describe in writing — the self beneath the performance of selfhood, unstable, elusive, and only visible under pressure.

By the time this lithograph was made Bacon was in his late seventies and Leiris in his eighties. The weight of retrospection is present in the image without being stated — two old men, one examining the other, both knowing what examination of this kind costs and what it reveals.
