Modern Room (C.252) was the most art-historically self-conscious work in Roy Lichtenstein's Interior Series — a contemporary living space structured through a print style that carried explicit references to the modernist interior design lineage: the clean lines of mid-century furniture, the restrained palette, the emphasis on space and light over ornament. The modernist interior had its own history — from the spare, functionalist spaces of the Bauhaus through the mid-century American living rooms that had been designed under the influence of European modernism. The combination of lithograph, woodcut, and screenprint gave Modern Room (C.252) a surface that combined multiple qualities of stroke — the lithographic tone, the woodcut's physical texture, the screenprint's crisp character — each process contributing something different to the overall image.
Lichtenstein had developed this kind of technical combination across his print career, and by 1990 he was deploying it with complete fluency. Modern Room (C.252) used the variety of its printed surfaces to evoke the variety of textures in a contemporary interior — the different materials of furniture, wall, floor, and artwork present as distinct textures of printed element.
