Two Paintings: Green Lamp (C.201) belongs to Roy Lichtenstein's Paintings Series, produced in 1984 — among the most conceptually layered bodies of work in his print catalogue. Each work in the series depicted paintings hanging on walls or propped in interiors, making the print a representation of a representation: an image of an art object that was itself an art object, the gap between original and reproduction that had run through his practice since the early 1960s made structurally explicit.

The picture showed two paintings within a single interior — one a domestic still life with a green lamp, the other an abstract form — both rendered through Lichtenstein's combination of woodcut, lithograph, screenprint, and collage on Arches 88 paper. The works within the work were depicted in different registers: the lamp painting in a representational mode, the other more abstract, the two side by side making the contrast between different painterly approaches part of the picture's subject rather than incidental to it.

The Paintings Series was Lichtenstein's most direct examination of the painting as an object — not as a window onto a depicted world but as a physical thing hanging on a wall, framed, domesticated, converted from art into interior decoration. By making prints of paintings he extended a line of inquiry that ran through his entire career: how images circulate in culture, how their meaning shifts as they move from the studio to the gallery to the living room. Two Paintings: Green Lamp (C.201) undertook this examination with the complexity and technical ambition the series would sustain throughout.
