Two Paintings: Beach Ball (C.204) introduced one of the most unexpected subjects in Roy Lichtenstein's Paintings Series — a beach ball, rendered as a depicted painting within the picture, its bold stripes and primary colours a Pop motif sitting in deliberate contrast to the more art-historically weighted subjects elsewhere in the series. Alongside a second, abstract form in the lower panel, the two depicted works created a dialogue between the figurative and the non-objective that the composition held without resolving.

The beach ball had a specific place in Lichtenstein's body of works — a mass-produced leisure object, a symbol of summer and consumer pleasure, drawn from the same world of popular imagery that had generated his early paintings. By making it the subject of a depicted painting within a print, he extended the Pop Art logic of his early career into the self-referential context of the Paintings Series: the beach ball was now not just an object but a painting of an object, and the print a depiction of that painting. The layers of mediation the series was examining were concentrated in a subject that was already, in Lichtenstein's work, a sign of mass-cultural reproduction.

The horizontal composition gave the two depicted works room to exist as distinct objects, side by side, the viewer invited to consider what it meant that they were shown together. That curatorial question — why these two works, in this juxtaposition — was itself part of the Paintings Series' broader inquiry into how paintings acquired and conveyed meaning through their context rather than solely through their content.
