Two Nudes (C.284) introduces the double figure into Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series, placing two female bodies side by side within a compressed and deliberately ambiguous space. Their proximity suggests intimacy, though the flattened surface of the relief print resists any convincing illusion of depth or physical environment.

The double nude has a long history within Western painting, though Lichtenstein approaches the subject through the visual language of comics, magazine illustration and commercial print rather than direct quotation from historical sources. The figures are built through thick contour lines, Ben-Day dots and sharply simplified colour, their poses stylised rather than naturalistic.

The tension between closeness and flatness gives the work its distinctive character. Although the two women share the same image space, the mechanical clarity of the print keeps them strangely separate, reinforcing the cool emotional distance that runs throughout the Nudes Series.
