Two Nudes, State I (C.285) revisits the composition of Two Nudes through an alternative colour palette, continuing Roy Lichtenstein’s longstanding interest in repetition and variation. The warmer tones and denser chromatic contrasts alter the mood of the image without changing the underlying structure of the figures themselves.
Throughout his print career, Lichtenstein repeatedly returned to the idea that colour alone could transform the emotional atmosphere of a fixed image. In the Nudes Series, that approach becomes especially visible. Here, the altered palette shifts the relationship between the two figures, changing the visual temperature of the scene while preserving its carefully balanced geometry.
As with the Haystacks and Cathedrals before it, the state variant becomes more than a technical exercise. Colour operates as an independent force within the print, reshaping the viewer’s experience of the image through tone, contrast and surface alone.
