Landscape 7 (C.57) is among the most concentrated works in Lichtenstein’s Landscape series: a perfect semicircle in iridescent silver Mylar rises from the horizon between a yellow sky and a Ben-Day dot earth — sunrise rendered as pure geometric emblem, natural phenomenon translated entirely into a printed sign. The Mylar carries a physical reflectivity that shifts as the viewer moves, a quality of light that neither painting nor conventional printmaking could achieve. Set against the yellow sky and mechanical dot-field, this reflectivity sits in deliberate tension with the impersonal quality that otherwise defines Lichtenstein's approach — the one element in the piece that cannot be fully controlled, responding to the conditions of the room, not to the decisions of the artist. Lichtenstein's interest in the landscape was never observational. What drew him to the subject was the system of codes through which American culture had represented it — the simplified horizon, the colour band, the reduced elements of sky and earth that appeared in advertising, illustration, and popular print. Landscape 7 (C.57) applies this logic to the sunrise: one of the most thoroughly codified subjects in Western visual culture, its form reduced to a semicircle, its drama to a yellow field.
