Roy Lichtenstein
21.5 × 16.6 in (mount)
Landscape 8 (C.58) is the only vertically oriented work in Roy Lichtenstein's Ten Landscapes Series, and the shift in format produces a significantly different kind of image.
Where the horizontal works read as familiar landscape views — sky above, earth below, the horizon as organising principle — the vertical image places a solitary figure against a deep, dark ground, the landscape becoming something closer to a nocturne. Iridescent silver Mylar collage on opaque black and grey moiré Rowlux gives the work its atmospheric depth, the reflective Mylar suggesting moonlight on water or sky.
The figure — a silhouette, its details absorbed into the dark ground — adds a human presence that is absent from every other work in the series.
Lichtenstein had made this kind of isolated figure a recurring element in his landscape imagery of the late 1960s, drawing on the codes of American popular illustration — the lone figure against a dramatic natural backdrop, a cliché of mid-century commercial design. In Landscape 8 (C.58) that cliché is stripped to its barest components and placed on a materially complex ground that gives it an unexpected gravity.
