In Rubber Bands (State I) (2017), the same seven-line sentence appears in a warm peach-pink against a flat ochre-yellow ground — RUBBER / BANDS / STRETCH / REAL FAR / UNTIL / THEY / DON'T stacked from top to bottom, the hollow-outlined capitals rendered in a colour so close to the ground behind them that the text is barely legible. Where State II delivered the sentence in aqua against cream, creating a cool, atmospheric glow, State I absorbs the inscription into its own field, the letters present but muted, operating at the threshold of visibility.

The State designation matters here. State I is the origin point of the series — the first calibration, the initial choice about how much the text can disappear before it ceases to function. Ruscha had always been interested in the conditions under which language holds on, the minimum amount of visual information required to sustain a reading, and State I pushes that question further than its successor. The peach-on-ochre palette gives the work a warmth that State II does not have — less ethereal, more physical, the colour of skin or desert sand — and the hollow letterforms, open at their centres, create a different relationship between text and ground than the glowing solids of the aqua version.

The sentence itself — rubber bands stretch real far until they don't — carries the same withheld conclusion across all three states, the missing final word a constant across the series. What changes is the degree of effort required to read it. State I asks the most of the viewer, the inscription close enough in tone to its ground that sustained attention is required to assemble the words. The sentence about stretching is itself stretched to the point of near-disappearance.
