Cash For Tools 2 by Ed Ruscha shares its phrase and its format with the first version but the surface has shifted considerably. Where Cash For Tools 1 was dense and monolithic, the rust-brown field consuming the letters almost entirely, this version shows more variation — patches of grey-green beneath the corrosion, areas where the oxidisation has lifted or flaked, the metal surface revealing its layers. The letters are the same blocky octagonal capitals, the same three-line arrangement, but the ground behind them is less uniform, more process, the material caught at a different stage of its transformation. Two holes at the top corners, one in the centre — the hardware of a sign that has been hung somewhere, taken down, and outlasted whatever it was advertising.

The pairing of two versions within the Rusty Signs series is characteristic of how Ruscha approached seriality throughout his career — not repetition for its own sake but the close examination of how the same subject changes across iterations, what variation within a fixed framework reveals that a single version cannot. Cash For Tools 1 and 2 are not the same print in different states; they are two objects that have aged differently, their surfaces recording different environmental histories even though they were made at the same time, through the same process, at the same workshop.

CASH FOR TOOLS is part of the informal economy of the American roadside — the hand-lettered transaction, the exchange conducted outside retail, the system that has always run alongside the official economy of shops and receipts. In the Rusty Signs series that informality is given a patina of age that the original signs rarely acquired, the Mixografia process producing in a single impression the kind of surface that would take decades of weather to achieve.
