Dead End 1 (2014) looks like a sign that has been left out in the weather for thirty years. The square format is the colour and texture of oxidised metal — deep bronze, rust brown, the surface mottled and uneven — and DEAD sits above END in large embossed capitals, the letters pressed into the field so that they catch light along their raised edges. Four small studs punctuate the composition, two between the words, two below, the kind of reflective hardware that appears on actual municipal signage.

That object quality is the point of Mixografia. The Los Angeles workshop, with which Ruscha had collaborated since the 1980s, developed a process for printing in deep relief onto handmade paper, allowing him to produce works with genuine sculptural dimensionality — surfaces that have weight and shadow more than the flat precision of screenprint or lithograph. The Rusty Signs series, produced in 2014 in editions of fifty, applied that process to a group of phrases drawn from the functional signage of the American road: Dead End, Cash for Tools, For Sale, Pay Nothing Until April. Each one rendered as though it had been cast in metal and left to corrode.

The phrase DEAD END is among the bluntest in the municipal lexicon — a direction not to proceed, a termination of forward movement. Within the Rusty Signs series it sits alongside commercial language and transactional phrases, but carries a different register: less economic, more absolute. The corroded surface amplifies that quality, the deterioration suggesting not just age but a kind of accumulated finality, a sign that has been telling people to stop for so long that stopping seems inevitable. Ruscha had always been drawn to language that does more than it intends to, and dead end, stripped of its traffic context and pressed into bronze-coloured paper, does considerably more.
