Connection runs through all four as the organising idea, with Haring finding a new way to stage it each time rather than repeating a single pose. Sometimes that connection is quiet, sometimes it's a shared moment of triumph, sometimes it's reduced to nothing more than two hands meeting — but in every case the emotional content sits entirely in the gesture itself, with no facial expression or background detail to explain it further. That economy came directly from Haring's years drawing on subway platforms, where an image had only a few seconds to communicate before a commuter walked past it.
Produced in 1987, the year Haring opened his Pop Shop on Lafayette Street, the set translates that same instinct for instant legibility into a warmer, more sociable palette, purple, orange, teal and yellow standing in for the black-and-white urgency of his public work. As the portfolio that launched the six-part Pop Shop project, it marks the point where Haring's street vocabulary moved directly into the shop and onto the gallery wall without losing any of its directness.
