Produced in 1963 as a lithograph on Arches paper in an edition of 200, the work comes from Picasso’s later years, when he returned to intimate, human subjects with greater directness.
A mother holds her child close, their bodies merging into a single, continuous form. The contours are loose but assured, drawn in black with minimal correction. There’s no background detail to distract—just the figures, held together through line and proximity.
The colour is kept spare. Aside from the black outline, small touches of green appear in the mother’s hair, breaking the surface just enough to give the image a lift. It’s restrained, but deliberate—nothing is added without purpose.
By this stage, Picasso was working with complete confidence in lithography, using it as an extension of drawing. The medium allows for spontaneous quality, and that shows here—each mark feels direct, almost instinctive, with no sense of overworking.
The subject itself is one he returned to repeatedly across his career, but here it’s handled without sentimentality. The closeness between mother and child is clear, built through the way the lines loop and close in on themselves, creating a contained, almost circular composition.
Grand Maternité holds through simplicity. A few lines tightly bound are enough to convey the weight of the subject without excess.
