Created as an unnumbered lithograph on Arches paper, the work signals Picasso's mastery of the medium during his prolific printmaking years of the 1950s and 1960s, when he produced over 400 lithographs at the Mourlot workshop in Paris.
The image focuses on the woman's serene face, framed by golden hair adorned with what appears to be a floral crown or wreath. Picasso employs a restrained palette of soft yellows, pinks, and blues against a deep charcoal background, creating an intimate atmosphere that recalls his earlier Rose Period whilst maintaining the simplified forms of his mature style. The lithographic medium allows for subtle gradations of tone, particularly visible in the modelling of the face and the delicate rendering of the hair.
The subject's white dress, suggested through loose, gestural strokes at the bottom of the work, reinforces the work's air of classical elegance. This approach to female portraiture reflects Picasso's renewed interest in traditional themes during the post-war period, when he frequently depicted women with an emphasis on beauty and grace rather than the psychological complexity that had defined much of his earlier work.
Picasso's collaboration with master printer Fernand Mourlot reshaped his approach to lithography, enabling him to work directly on the stone and achieve painterly effects previously difficult in the medium. The artist's signature appears on the work, authenticating this example from what became one of his most celebrated series of lithographic portraits.
The floral elements in the woman's hair suggest themes of fertility and renewal that run through much of Picasso's later work, whilst the classical profile and composed expression evoke the lasting appeal of Mediterranean art. Femme à la Robe reflects Picasso's ability to bring together his earlier innovations with more traditional subject matter, creating a work that remains grounded in both. The lithograph captures a moment of quiet dignity, its restrained colour harmony and gentle modelling revealing the artist's sensitivity to the medium's unique expressive possibilities.
