Bad Boys 3 (Littmann P. 58) by Keith Haring forms part of the artist's Bad Boys series, a group of works created in 1986 that focuses on male relationships and queer identity. Distinct from many of Haring's best-known prints, the series turns away from the public symbols that dominate much of his work and instead concentrates on the human figure and the complexities of personal interaction.
Bad Boys 3 centres on two male figures rendered through fluid black contours that move across the surface in a continuous flow. Their bodies are closely connected, creating a work built around gesture, proximity and interaction. Haring reduces the scene to a network of sweeping lines and simplified forms, allowing the relationship between the figures to become the primary focus of the image.
The Bad Boys portfolio occupies a distinctive position within Haring's practice. Created during a period when he was increasingly incorporating personal experiences into his work, the series reveals a more private dimension of his artistic output. As an openly gay artist working in New York during the 1980s, Haring brought visibility to subjects that were rarely addressed so openly within contemporary art, expanding the scope of what his art could encompass.
