The Untitled 1–4 portfolio by Keith Haring (Littmann PP. 74–75) is a series of four works created in 1987, the set brings together a concise group of images in a style that would later evolve into the Pop Shop series.
The set of four features an unfolding story - told through the different motifs that appear in each of the works. Whilst different, they are united by the colour scheme Haring employs creating a sense of unity and of each work standing alone individually as well as in a complete set.
Haring would extend this vignette sense of story-telling through his Pop Shop, where the motifs could stand alone as single pieces or together as a more fuller story. losing visual story. Within the portfolio, Haring shifts between individual and collective presence, moving from isolated figures to grouped configurations without losing clarity.
The images remain direct and accessible, drawing on the cartoon style that informed Haring’s early development, while the structured layouts keep each work contained creating a balance between play and control giving the portfolio a unified rhythm.
The Untitled 1–4 portfolio presents a focused sequence of works that distil Haring’s into clear, repeatable forms, anticipating the approach that would later be developed more fully in the iconic Pop Shop series.
