Keith Haring
11 x 14 3/4 in
Untitled 3 (Littmann PP. 75) by Keith Haring draws on one of the defining themes of his work: the influence of television and mass media within contemporary life and society. Presented within the outline of a television screen, the image transforms a familiar household object into a vehicle for broader ideas about communication, visibility and cultural influence.
At the centre of Untitled 3 is a simplified yellow figure positioned within a red screen-like field. The figure's outstretched arms extend, creating a connection between the individual and the broadcast device that contains it. Along the left-hand side, a series of circular forms recalls the controls and speakers of a television set, reinforcing the association with electronic media. Haring reduces both figure and machine to their essential components, creating an image that is immediately recognisable while remaining open to interpretation.
Television appears throughout Haring's work as a symbol of information, entertainment and mass communication. Working during a period when broadcast media exerted an increasingly powerful influence on everyday life, he frequently explored the relationship between individuals and the images that surrounded them. Rather than presenting television as purely positive or negative, Haring treated it as a defining feature of modern culture, capable of shaping perception, behaviour and collective experience.
The bold palette of blue, red and yellow enhances the work's connection to commercial graphics and broadcast imagery. Combined with the thick black contours that characterise Haring's art, these colours create an image with the visual force of a logo, advertisement or television ident.
