Keith Haring
12 x 15 in
Pop Shop I (C) (Littmann P. 83) by Keith Haring centres a large yellow figure with arms raised overhead, two cropped bodies reaching in from opposite corners to fist bump at a circular opening in the figure's midsection.
Haring returned to friendship and human contact throughout his Pop Shop years, reducing it again and again to the simplest possible gesture — a handshake, an embrace, here a fist bump — so that the idea could be read instantly rather than illustrated in detail. Cutting the two outer figures off at the frame's edge pushes that idea further still: the people themselves barely matter, it's the moment of contact between them that carries the whole image. Produced in 1987, the year Haring opened his Pop Shop on Lafayette Street, the print translates the same economy of line he'd developed on the subway platforms into a warmer, more sociable register, purple, orange and teal replacing the black-and-white contrast of his earlier public work with something closer to celebration than confrontation.
