Keith Haring
12 x 15 in
Pop Shop I (D) (Littmann P. 83) by Keith Haring shows a purple figure below, both arms raised overhead, hands meeting those of a teal figure suspended horizontally above it against a yellow ground.
The support is literal before it's anything else — one figure physically holding another aloft, the raised arms doing the actual work of keeping the upper body afloat rather than merely gesturing toward it. That physical act reads just as easily as an emotional one: a friend lifted up, quite plainly, by someone underneath them willing to take the weight. Haring returned to this kind of image often across his Pop Shop years, using the plainest possible arrangement of bodies to carry an idea that would take a paragraph to state directly. Produced in 1987, the year Haring opened his Pop Shop on Lafayette Street, the print keeps the same warm, sociable palette running through the wider portfolio, red patterning along the base grounding the two figures against the flat yellow field above them.
